MANUKAU CITY

Students from Manukau secondary schools, private training establishments and alternative education providers come together next week to discuss topics affecting the city’s youth at the Converse 08 – Manukau Youth Voices summit.

The aim of the summit is to establish a network of youth leaders and develop their leadership skills with particular emphasis given to building social responsibility and encouraging them to offer peer support to their fellow students.

Workshops at the conference include:

· Cultural speak
· Youth expression
· Leadership
· Alcohol and drugs

The organising team made up of representatives from CAYAD, Tupu Services, Ministry of Youth Development, Youthline, Genesis Youth Project and Tamaki Ki Raro have a wealth of experience dealing with youth issues.

Youth have been heavily involved in planning for the summit, providing input into the programme and designing the advertising flyer.

CAYAD coordinator at Te Matariki Clendon Community Centre Jaylene Ball says,
“This is a summit by youth for youth aimed at encouraging the students to plan, talk, think and interact. They will then drive their ideas further and with our help and other like minded organisations find ways to implement them.

“Invitations have gone out to all private training establishments and high schools in Manukau. Judging by the amazing response we’re in for an awesome day,” says
Jaylene.
