In a repeat of the Oceania’s finals Central Olympic’s Dafydd Sanders, 24 won the glamour fight in the heavyweight final of the Taekwondo New Zealand black belt championships, held at Avondale College over the weekend, the premier domestic event for the sport in the country.

Sanders beat his New Zealand team-mate and fellow Aucklander Michael Marsh 12-6 for the title. Both athletes will be representing New Zealand at the Commonwealth Champs in Winipeg , Canada next month.
Team-mate Nic Dorman from Christchurch had a classy 11-4 win in the middleweight final over Gabriel Abreu of Victoria University, a good warm up for Canada.

Hutt Valley’s Hayley Schofield, 18 another Commonwealth Champs representative, was impressive with a 7-0 win in the first round over Kayla Cronin. Former Cantab, now North Harbour resident, Andrea Kilday was equally impressive, with an easy seven point win over Christina Huang.

After a busy year, Olympians Logan Campbell and Robyn Cheong did not take part as athletes, but coached four competitors to gold medals between them.

Another international fighter but not competing in Canada, Melanie Maurice upset Diana Kasad for the bantamweight title. Auckland’s Jane Ma won the featherweight division, while Upper Hutt’s Tracey Coleman took the lightweight title.

Vaughn Scott, Sejong, was too good for Christchurch’s Alan Brian in the men’s lightweight division while Christchurch’s Danny Cartlidge won the welterweight division.

Desmond Allen from Sejong won the flyweight final and Karori’s Malcolm Tester won the bantamweight title.
Auckland’s Vivienne Fountain and Ace’s Peter Woon won the female and male poomsae gold medals, respectively.
