Fatal House Fire

Around 09:50am on Wednesday the 5th of November 2008 the Porirua fire brigade attended a house fire at Hereford Street, Porirua.

This is the address of a local couple and their nine children.

At the time of the fire at home was the 34 year old mother, 13 year old daughter, 3 year old son, 2 year old daughter and 10 month old daughter.

The mother saved the 3 year old son and 10 month old daughter by throwing them out a window.

However, despite her best efforts she was prevented from saving her 2 year old daughter by the heat and the smoke of the fire.

The 13 year old daughter escaped by jumping out of the lounge window.

The family have asked the Police not to identify the decesed to the media.

The post mortem was carried out today and the results will be duly reported to the Coroner.

Police and an ESR scientist have carried out a scene examination.

Enquiries are continuing as to the cause of the fire.
