UPPER HUTT

Upper Hutt Police are holding recently stolen property which needs to be linked back to their owners.

The property was stolen between midnight on Sunday 4 October and 3.45 am on Monday 5 October, when between five and ten vehicles were broken into. A further ten vehicles were interfered with during attempted break-ins. Police believe the excess of property is possibly due to incidents of theft going unreported.

Upper Hutt Sergeant Steven Dearns says, "We'd like people to contact us if they haven't already. We've made enquiries with Totara Park residents who have said they thought the crime against them was too minor to report. In reality, every report of crime gives us more information about where our offenders are active".

Sergeant Dearns adds that easy access to some of the vehicles led to the high number of thefts.

"These offenders entered mainly through unlocked doors. In many instances, van doors were locked but the rear hatch was not."

Five males aged between 16 and 21 were apprehended by Police in Totara Park on 5 October. They had a large amount of stolen property in their possession including tools, stereo units and clothing.

All appeared in the Upper Hutt District Court on Monday 5 October 2009 and were remanded until 14 October 2009.
