Police have launched a homicide inquiry after 47-year-old Kaikohe woman died early this morning.

Police are investigating a family violence incident that occurred about 8.30pm in a flat in the main street of Kaikohe last night.

During the incident the woman was injured and an ambulance was called.
A concerned member of public went to her aid and performed CPR until the ambulance arrived.

Police were also called to the scene and the woman was flown to Whangärei Hospital.

She died at about 6am this morning.

A 38-year-old man was arrested at the scene and charged with assault.
No-one else is being sought in connection with the death of the woman.

The man will be appearing in the Kaikohe District Court this morning.

Police have cordoned off the flat and will be continuing with their investigation today.
A post mortem will be carried out on the woman's body to determine the cause of death.
