UPPER HUTT

Shortly after 4.00pm on Wednesday the 20th of January 2010 Upper Hutt Police responded to an incident on Fergusson Drive at Silverstream.

The incident involved the occupants of a Community Corrections van which had been traveling south on Fergusson Drive at the time with 6 occupants.

Detective Sergeant Tony Heathcote said "a male occupant was assaulted by another who used a pocket knife causing a large laceration to the victim's neck. Our enquires at this stage indicate that this was an unproved attack and the victim was caught by complete surprise".

The driver of the van stopped immediately and the altercation continued out on the public footpath and the Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.

The 37 year old victim has been taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

A 52 year old man was located at the scene and is now in Police custody. He will appear in the Upper Hutt District Court tomorrow morning facing a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police have recovered the knife which they believe was used.

Upper Hutt Police would like to speak with anyone who has any information relating to this assault.
