Porirua Police say some licensed premises in Porirua are continuing to flout the law, following another controlled purchase operation in the city at the weekend.

Senior Sergeant Steve Sargent says 23 on and off-licences in and around Porirua were targeted in a controlled purchase operation (CPO) on Friday night.

"An off-licence, namely a supermarket, sold a single can of beer to our 17 year-old female volunteer, without asking for any identification."

"Its disappointing that supermarkets find it necessary to sell beer in individual cans, as it targets vulnerable people in our community."

Steve Sargent says two on-licences, namely bars, also sold alcohol to our volunteers.

"This is a really disappointing result, considering we ran a similar CPO just a few weeks ago where another supermarket and three other bars sold alcohol to our underage volunteers."

"If you sell alcohol to minors, you will be caught. We are planning several more CPOs over the next few months to stamp out poor compliance with the law. These will occur anywhere, anytime."

The supermarket and the two bars who sold alcohol to the minors on Friday night are being referred to the Liquor Licensing Authority for further action.
