Rugby’s highest prize, the Webb Ellis Cup – also known as ‘Bill’ - will be the key attraction during the Trafalgar Park grand re-opening on Saturday 28 August.

Nelson rugby fans are invited to come to the Park’s first open day since the completion of the $7.4m upgrade to have their photo taken with the Cup, which will be on public display in Nelson for the first time to recognise the Park’s readiness for Rugby World Cup 2011.

Nelson City Council Chief Executive Keith Marshall is delighted with the Park’s new look and eager to see the venue used for as many community activities as possible.

“The upgrade was always about making Trafalgar Park into a multi-purpose facility where we could have concerts, soccer matches, rugby games and more. Every new feature of the Park was carefully considered with the idea of ensuring it would be broadly used.

“And it’s become a striking gateway into the city, a landmark that all residents can be proud of.”

Everyone in the community is encouraged to stop by sometime during the day to take a tour of the Park’s newest additions, including an incredible media centre where broadcasters will call games for the Tasman Makos and RWC 2011.

The open day is free and MoreFM will broadcast live and have a sausage sizzle alongside other local concession stands.

Free photos with the Webb Ellis Cup will be taken and put onto Council’s Flickr account for free download after the event.

Other activities on offer include rippa rugby with players from the Tasman Makos, coaching clinics with Nelson Bays Football, and cycling lessons for kids who can bring their best dressed bike along to compete for a prize.

10am – 11am: Civic ceremony, ribbon cutting, media photo op
11am – 2pm: Webb Ellis Cup on display for photos
11am – 4pm: self-guided tours of Trafalgar Park
12pm – 3pm: Tasman Makos, Nelson Bays Football, and Cycling Nelson on hand for coaching clinics and kids activities
