Big victories by the top sides in both the men’s and women’s Scarbro Caro Bowl kept the leading teams out in front after four rounds.

The Parnell and Royal Oak women didn’t drop sets as they defeated Pompallier and Remuera respectively 6-0 with a few faces from the past on court when Royal Oak player Remuera. The Oak were still led by teen Leela Beattie but also recalled Rachel Dive. Remuera had the older sisters Jenna Lee and Julia Erakovic playing for them. Lee being the sister of former pro Shona and Julia the older sibling of Marina Erakovic.

The Parnell women’s team were too strong all around with Franziska Etzel defeating Shelley Bryce 6-3 6-3 in the top singles match and Pavlina Nola beating Mikaela Davies 6-3 6-1 in the second singles. In the other match Kohimarama stayed in the top three on the points table after a 5-1 victory over neighbours Mission Bay. In the top singles match Kairangi Vano was too strong for Stacey Housley winning in straight sets for Kohimarama.

Kohi now have the sternest test of the fifth round when they host Royal Oak. The key match will feature Vano versus Beattie in the No1 singles.

Remuera host Mission Bay with both teams desperate for points and Glendowie will be coming off a bye to face the mighty Parnell at Parenll. Although this match looks a foregone conclusion it is still worthwhile watching the likes of former international players, Etzel, Nola (who was top 100 ranked), Rewa Harriman and Amanda Trail.

The Parnell men’s teams win over Blockhouse Bay may have been 6-0 but there was still a battle, especially in the top singles where Kiwi No3 Rubin Statham contended with Artem Sitak, a Russian-born, now Kiwi resident.

Sitak is ranked around 340 in the world but had just stepped off a flight from the United States and played Statham with the New Zealand Davis Cup player coming out the winner in three tight sets.

Parnell are one point ahead of Campbell Park who dropped their first point of the season when they defeated Remuera 5-1. The match which was lost was the second doubles where James Shortall and Martin Colenbrander were too strong over Adam Thompson and Robbie Cheyne.

Cockle Bay remained mid table after a close fought 4-2 win over Royal Oak. The Oak won the top singles as Aaron McDougall outlasted Andrew Batie in a third set tie break, while Matt Meredith gained a match back in the second singles 7-5 in the third over Scott Winnard.

In the other men’s contest the Teo Susnjak led Pompallier defeated Herne Bay by a surprisingly easy score of 6-0.

With the fifth round this Friday the big contests feature teams chasing third and fourth places. Remuera host Cockle Bay. The Bay have 15 points and Remuera 15 and both are looking to seal top four positions. Parnell host Herne Bay while Royal Oak have the tough task of being at home against the strong Campbell Park with its international line up.
