UPPER HUTT

Upper Hutt Police are investigating an aggravated robbery at a house in Chatsworth Road, Silverstream early last night.

At about 6 o'clock, three men armed with firearms entered a house and confronted an elderly couple, who were watching television at the time.

Upper Hutt Area Commander Inspector Mike Hill says two of the men then pointed the firearms at the pair and demanded gold and cash.

"The offenders then made the elderly couple lie down on the floor at gunpoint while they searched the house."

Mike Hill says after about 20 minutes, the trio fled the address with a reasonably large amount of cash in $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes.

"Before the offenders fled though, they bound the elderly couple and covered their heads. This has left the victims extremely shaken in what was a very very scary incident."

Police are unsure how the offenders travelled to the address and a description of them is limited at this stage.

"They are described as either Maori, Polynesian or African, who were all wearing dark blue or black clothing, and all were of athletic build."

Mike Hill says, "We urgently need to hear from anyone in the Chatsworth Road, Silverstream area who witnessed anything suspicious between 6 and 6:30pm last night. We also appeal to anyone who may know who these offenders are, who would have had a large amount of cash on them last night."

Anyone with any information should contact Upper Hutt Police on (04) 527 2300 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
