Rotorua Mayor Kevin Winters and Rotorua MP Todd McClay have welcomed a government subsidy for Rotoma’s sewerage scheme, which will allow communities in Rotoma to have a fully reticulated wastewater system.

The subsidy is for 50% of the project and will amount to $5.13 million (including GST).

Rotorua Mayor Kevin Winters said that he was really delighted to receive the funding for the Lake Rotoma sewerage scheme, vindicating Council’s efforts and actions to secure new money through the Ministry of Health for improving Rotorua’s lakes.

"This is one more important step towards water quality improvement and ensuring that another of our important lakeside communities has a secure future,” Mayor Winters said.

Mr McClay said the announcement of the funding was great news for residents of Rotoma and for the lake .

“Following a meeting with Mayor Winters and representations from Rotoma residents I wrote to the Minister of Health in April 2009 in support of Sanitary Works Subsidy Scheme funding to the electorate.

“This subsidy will go a long way to improving the health and well-being of the community in Rotoma.”
