The Milford Community Trust is to hold its first strategic planning workshop inMilford and Te Anau at the start of next month.

Trust chair Jane Taylor said that Malcolm Morrison from specialist local government consulting firm Morrison Low in Auckland will be the facilitator for the two dayworkshop, which runs from November 1-2.

Southland District Council with the support of the Department of Conservation and Environment Southland approved the establishment of the Trust, which is a Council Controlled Organisation, last year.

Its membership was finalised following theelection of a community representative, the selection of the four trustees and appointment of an independent chair in March (the sitting Te Anau Community Board member is automatically a trustee by right).

Jane Taylor said, “The workshop is designed as a way to establish our key objectivesfor the years ahead as we aim to protect and maintain this iconic part of New Zealand.”

The establishment of a Trust to oversee the development of infrastructure and provision of essential services for Milford has been many years in the making. All stakeholders in Milford are encouraged to present their views to the trustees at theworkshop.

The Milford community occupies a very small geographic area, but has several separate management arrangements covering Freshwater Basin, the hotel, the lodge, the airport, the Cleddau Fan/Deepwater Basin, the state highway and specificDepartment of Conservation facilities.

Jane Taylor said that the Trust, established by the Council in 2007, plans to meet approximately every six weeks as it works towards meeting its objectives
