TE KUITI

Waikato Police working to establish the identity of a person killed when struck by a train in Te Kuiti during the early hours of this morning believe they have established who the person is.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the incident, north of the town's CBD near Hospital Rd, about 1.30am.

On arrival they found a man had been struck by a train and killed. The incident did not occur near any railway crossing and is not considered suspicious.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to what has occurred and the death has been reported to the Coroner.

Rail traffic on the Main Trunk Line was stopped and did not resume until about 7am.

Specialist Search and Rescue staff were called in from Hamilton this morning to assist in identifying the victim.

Police are currently working to notify the deceased's family about what has occurred and the man's name will not be released until that has been completed.
