The first stage of the Taipo Stream Pathway from Church Road to Balmoral Street was approved yesterday by the Napier City Council.

The initial proposal to also take the path through Willow Drive to Neeve Road raised concerns with residents about its proximity to houses, the width of the path and its encroachment on to the Reserve.

However, extensive public consultation has been very effective in bringing all interested parties’ views to the Council.

The first section of the pathway, a joint Napier City Council / Hawke’s Bay Regional Council project, will be built this year and the Napier City Council will continue to consider the issues of Balmoral Street to Neeve Road over the next year.

The project is an important link in the National “Water Trail” Ride and fits with the Council’s cycling strategy which seeks to provide safe, off-road cycling and walking opportunities and links to our cycling network.

“Taradale residents can now look forward to enjoying the reserve in all weathers. It brings the benefits of a dedicated pathway, until now only enjoyed along our coast, right in to their community,” said Mayor Barbara Arnott.
