Napier City Council has achieved a significant saving in providing for street lighting improvements over the next few years.

Tenders were let which culminated in the finalisation of two contracts. One was for the supply of 1000 new light columns for $517,070 – nearly $80,000 less than the council had expected. The second, for 2000 luminaires (light fixtures affixed to the head of the columns), gives the council a three-year supply.

Suburbs prioritised for lighting upgrades are Napier Hill and Ahuriri. Not all luminaires in need of replacing will require new columns, however.

The street lighting in Battery Road was recently upgraded, improving night-time driving conditions on the collector road.

Napier’s street lighting has traditionally been based on mainly yellow light fixtures. Residential areas will be upgraded with white luminaires while, for safety reasons, arterial routes will continue to have yellow light.

The light fixtures to be installed will use 50 percent less energy than existing lights without reducing the amount of light output – and in some cases it will be better.
