Statham Wins Title & Lee Advances In US Open Playoff

Kiwi Davis Cup player Rubin Statham has won the doubles title at the US$15,000 Futures tournament in Kassel in Germany.

Statham combined with Australian Adam Hubble to beat Marek Michalicka(Czech Repbulic) and Maciej Smola(Poland) 6-3 6-3 in the semifinals and then defeated Germans Gero Kretschmer and Alexander Satschko 6-3 4-6 10-8 for the title.

It is Statham’s third ITF Futures doubles title this year.

Meanwhile in the United States former New Zealand Junior champion and Auckland player Adam Lee who is on a scholarship at Wake Forest University, North Carolina has won his way into the final round of the US Open National Playoffs after success at the Southern Qualifier tournament.

He will take part in the US Open National Playoffs to be held Aug. 17-20 in New Haven, Connecticut. in conjunction with the WTA's New Haven Open where he will compete against 12 other sectional champions for a wild card into the qualifying tournament for the 2012 US Open.

Lee, 20 has won his last six match of the season for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in College tennis.
