Generally favourable weather has seen good progress on the first stage of the Hasting Street redevelopment.

As a result, Albion Street has been re-opened for parking and to one-way traffic from Hastings Street to Marine Parade.

Vautier Street is closed at Hastings Street to allow for the upgrade of the water main and it will remain closed while stormwater and sewer services are also upgraded.

Temporary sealing of Hastings Street between Albion Street and Rebel Sport has allowed for parallel parking in front of Dunvegan House. To free up parking, this approach will also be used as work continues towards Vautier Street.

Napier City Council staff have finished laying new large stormwater and sewer pipes from Albion Street to Motordrome. Once tested, the upgrade of existing water mains at the intersection of Hastings Street and Vautier Street will be complete.

Power and telecommunications companies have installed new ducts from Albion Street to Lighting Direct.

The first stage of kerb and channel has been poured from Albion Street to the Rebel Sport car park and foundations for new street light poles have gone in along the same length of road.

The makeover is aimed at creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment for shoppers and visitors in downtown Napier, continuing a trend that has encouraged through traffic away from inner city streets.

The upgrade of Hastings Street is being carried out in three sections over three years. Albion Street to Tennyson Street will be targeted next year and the last section, from Tennyson Street to Browning Street, is to be completed in 2014.
