Council staff continue to make good progress on the first stage of the Hastings Street redevelopment despite the recent wet weather.

The project remains on track for completion in November.

A start will be made this month on the western footpath. This will involve directing traffic onto the eastern side of Hastings Street, opening the new eastern footpath and closing sections of the western footpath as construction progresses.

Access to businesses will be maintained while the work is carried out.

The footpath on the eastern side of Hastings Street from Albion Street to Rebel Sport is almost complete, with curved seats being installed on the low tile walls and glass panels on the shelter.

From Rebel Sport to Vautier Street on the seaward side of Hastings Street, new kerb and channel has been poured, light pole foundations, vehicle crossings and paving bands have been installed and new vehicle accesses are open to traffic.

Still to come is the street furniture – including tree grates, rubbish bins, bike stands and bollards – and the pouring of footpath.

Mid-month, a start will be made outside Air New Zealand on preparations for new kerb and channel along the western side of the road from Albion Street to Station Street.
