Rail sculpture signals Hamilton suburb's history

Frankton’s railway heritage is reflected in a new sculpture to be formally opened by Hamilton City Council this week.

Hamilton artist Dean Tasker has hand-made the replica 5-metre railway semaphore signal sculpture which will tower over the intersection of Rifle Range Road and Pukeko Street. It is part of an intersection improvement initiative which includes a community artwork, and Mr Tasker’s sculpture was designed following feedback from the Frankton community.

West Ward Councillor Martin Gallagher, who will cut the ribbon at Thursday’s public event, says Mr Tasker’s sculpture is symbolic of an important element of Hamilton’s history.

“Growing up in Frankton, the rail system was an important part of the city, so Mr Tasker’s sculpture brings back some childhood memories for me,” Cr Gallagher says. “Hamilton is still a vital hub for New Zealand’s major transport networks, so it’s great to see that referenced in this artwork.”

Mr Tasker’s artwork will be located in the same neighbourhood as a number of historic railway cottages protected by Council’s District Plan, and within a few blocks of the Main Trunk Line through Hamilton. Mr Tasker is also a Frankton resident, and will be present for the installation of the sculpture and opening event.

The formal opening of the sculpture is at 12.30pm on Thursday, 23 August. Local schools have been invited to attend and the public is also welcome
