The Liquor Licensing Authority has ordered the suspension of the liquor licence of Hastings supermarket Countdown following a purchase operation in June 2012, which resulted in liquor being sold to a minor.

Hastings District Council staff combined with Police and District Health Board staff to carry out checks on licensed premises. The checks are aimed at reducing liquor abuse.

Hastings Countdown has had its off-licence suspended for 10 days from 7.00 am Monday 5th November to 7.00 am Friday 15th November 2012.

Hastings District Council Community Safety Manager Philip Evans says “This is the third time that the supermarket has failed a controlled purchase operation in the past five years, but the Authority took into account that the previous two incidents were four years ago.”

Mr Evans says “The suspension of the liquor licence would impose a significant penalty on the supermarket.”

He says “While it’s disappointing that some liquor outlets still choose to sell liquor to minors, the Controlled Purchase Operations showed that the majority of premises are continuing to meet their obligations under the Sale of Liquor Act. Council will continue these operations and will seek the suspension and cancellation of licences where appropriate.”
