There are signs that we may be in for a hot windy summer so, if you have dry vegetation piles to burn, now is the time to get onto it. Whether you’re waiting to burn backyard rubbish in a garden incinerator or to put a match to that bonfire in the paddock, it’s important to get it done soon, before spring winds pick up.

A restricted fire season (when a permit is required to light a fire in the open air) is already in place in some locations in the Marlborough-Kaikoura region and a total fire ban may be imposed any time – as soon as the fire risk requires it.

It’s easy to get a fire permit - fire permits are free and available through the Marlborough Kaikoura Rural Fire Authority’s Permit system. Ph: 03 520 7400; Fax: 03 520 7496; Email firepermit@marlborough.govt.nz

You can also check your Council’s website and look at the information on Fire Permits listed under Services or www.kaikoura.govt.nz.
