The full scale of the Hawke’s Bay Museum and Art Gallery redevelopment can now be seen in the built structure and Gemco Construction is finalising programmes for the final six months of work.

Groups touring the construction site are very positive about the project. Visitors have remarked on the contrast between the original and new wings, pointed out that the new wing complements the architecture of the Masonic Hotel and Veronica Sunbay and noted that the design takes full advantage of its commanding location and views.

Completing the new wing’s roof was a major step for the project. The steel framework was manufactured like a giant Meccano set and installing it called for exacting accuracy. The front door framework is now in place and full-height windows will soon be a featured addition to the main entrance.

Painters have been working on final coats in the original building interiors and galleries. Paint has also been applied to the exterior of the existing wing to give the Louis Hay-designed frontage a fresh new look. Building work continues in the reinstalled original entrance and the Octagon Gallery.

The Century Theatre entrance is undergoing a significant structural upgrade to allow for the new floor level and outside deck.
