Sick of unsuitable job candidates? Snaffle has the answer

A new job-matching tool, which will revolutionise the way employers find suitable candidates has launched in New Zealand.

Called Snaffle, the Otago-based company is the brainchild of brother and sister, Carl and Amber McNulty, and will be targeting businesses and job-seekers nationwide.

Similar to a dating site, the ingenious job-matching technology offers a radical new way of handling employment for both employers and employees.

“By using the capabilities of today’s technology, Snaffle will reduce the cost, time and stress involved in recruitment,” the McNultys say.

“During our research phase, we talked to over 3,500 New Zealand businesses about their recruitment needs and contemporary issues they faced with employment Ultimately, employers are tired of the laborious process after staff resign, currently requiring them to advertise for replacements, to get potentially an excess of unsuitable applicants they have to wade through. Often by the time they’ve interviewed people and made a decision, the original person is long gone.

“With Snaffle, the process is reversed. The moment someone resigns, an employer can go straight to Snaffle and, via our filtering system, see the perfect batch of candidates with the exact job title they need in their specific industry.

“Up until this point, Snaffle is entirely free for employers. Once they’ve identified suitable candidates, they then pay a fee to get more details about the ones they’re keen to interview and that’s it - no need to advertise, no need to read through dozens of irrelevant CVs, they only get candidates who can do the job. It’s a quick and an easy way to find the right match.”

Job-seekers pay nothing to upload their details on to Snaffle while employers are charged via a tiered system, based on the job’s salary. “For example, if it’s a $60,000 job, they pay $60 for each candidate profile they want.”

With a staff of 14, Snaffle is based in the McNultys’ hometown, Cromwell, in Central Otago.

The siblings have combined their skills, with Managing Director Carl having experience in construction and engineering and Marketing Director Amber a background in travel and customer service.

The idea for Snaffle came while Carl was working as a welder at his step-father’s engineering business. “He couldn’t get replacements for people leaving and was finding it hard to even get people through the door for an interview. He said he wished it could be the other way round and I thought ‘perhaps it could be’ and that was the start of Snaffle.”

The industries Snaffle will be focusing on include the construction, accounting and legal sectors, forestry, dairy, transport and logistics, automotive, architecture and design, manufacturing, property and real estate, sales, office and administration, hospitality, beauty therapy and hair dressing. The medical sector will be added shortly.

“We started initially with construction, accounting and legal as these industries in particular told us they wanted something that would streamline the process for them and were extremely positive about Snaffle. The demand is certainly there – particularly around the Christchurch rebuild.

“For example, we spoke to a major construction company which had 800 applicants for one middle management position. It took five HR personnel three days to sift through them all and determine the shortlist. That’s 15 working days just to get to the interview stage. Had Snaffle been available at that time, they could have created a shortlist of suitable candidates immediately,” says McNulty.

“While it has taken 18 months to build the back-end technology, on Day One we will be able utilise the extensive database of employers that have contributed to the hundreds of job titles in our system. Now we need candidates to upload their details, after which we will be the catalyst to close the gap between employers and job-seekers.”

As for the name Snaffle, the McNultys say it’s based on the old English meaning “to take something quickly for yourself”. “That’s what we want to do for employers and job-seekers – allow them to snaffle top-notch staff or a brilliant job.
