People in Auckland lead the nation in terms of online purchases of fitness products and equipment according to research carried out by comparison shopping site PriceMe. Christchurch and Hamilton are the second and third largest spenders per capita. Aucklanders spend 22% more on fitness than the number two Christchurch.

It appears the online spend of fitness products and equipment is increasing nationwide. Online spend is generally a gauge of consumer interest, and research suggests there's a correlation between physical activity and consumption of fitness products.

Chris Palmer, PriceMe's Marketing Director, says that "Kiwis have spent more on fitness in general the last couple of years, especially in the Spring season. Our research covers more than 20,000 products listed on PriceMe that shoppers can compare prices for and purchase directly online. Consumers in large urban areas spend more on fitness than in smaller ones."
