Security analysts have been noting a recent spike in the quantity of detections of the ransomware virus flagged as Aesir file virus. A number of antivirus suites report this threat during scans or in the course of real-time protection routine. These solutions claim to then quarantine and eliminate the harmful entity, but the warning messages continue popping up, usually resuming after the next launch of the system.

According to the detection details, the infection lurks in AppData folder. Given the location affected, it becomes obvious even for a moderately tech savvy user that the problem is serious.

Aesir ransomware typically arrives together with spam email messages containing malicious attachments. Once users click on those attachments, ransomware quickly gets installed and start the encryption routine.

Not all ransomware threats cause as many unwanted effects as the latest variant of Locky virus. It encrypts your files with military grade encryption and demands 400 USD to have them back. When doing all of this, the application does not ask for the user’s permission. What is more, the software is persistent and cannot be uninstalled easily.

The right fix is a mixture of more thorough removal of the infection and the resetting of configuration skewed by it. Keep in mind you still cannot decrypt the files on your own. It is recommended to consult computer tech forums and seek assistance there. Computer security researchers are working hard creating ransomware decryptors. If you are lucky, your version of the virus is decryptable.

To be protected from disastrous effects of viruses like Aesir, you should make regular backups and keep them on a separate offline drive. Do not click on suspicious email attachments and links.
