As the experienced team at Shape Landscaping have found, often during the build of a new garden you may discover a problem area such as an existing fence or outbuilding that doesn’t fit the design of the new garden and it isn’t cost effective to replace or remove. A great solution to this problem is to plant climbing or creeping plants that will grow over the structure and disguise it. There are a number of options available to you. Some things to consider when choosing your climber are colour, fragrance and whether the plant is evergreen or deciduous. Shape Landscaping offer several alternatives below that may suit your needs.

Ficas pumila, commonly know as creeping or climbing fig is one of Shape Landscaping’s favourite plants for this purpose. It is a vigorous evergreen climber and clings with tightly compacted small heart-shaped leaves and grows with aerial roots over any structure. A bonus of this plant is that it tolerates very poor soil conditions and needs very little nutrient in the soil to establish itself. Ficas is ideal for covering concrete walls and fences and will follow the contours of any structure it grows over. It also has great noise dampening properties which make it perfect for creating a barrier between the road and your property.

Trachelospermum jasminoides, or star jasmin is an attractive evergreen climber or ground cover that will flower in full sun, partial sun or total shade. It has a small fragrant white flower which give out a delightful aroma from late spring through to autumn. It attaches itself by winding around wires or support structures such as a pergola or trellis or is just as happy to meander through garden beds.

Roses are one of the most popular garden shrubs in the world and come in a number of varieties that are climbers or ramblers. They are popular due to their wide variety of colours and brilliant displays. Generally flowering through the summer period they provide a strong fragrance throughout the garden.

Passionfruit not only tastes delicious but is another evergreen climbing option for your garden with glossy foliage and fragrant exotic flowers. The vines are ideal for quickly covering trellis, pergolas or growing around the base of a deck area and will begin to produce fruit after approximately eight months. They require regular watering and fertiliser to continue to be productive and grow best in full sun with shelter from wind and frost.

Climbers are a brilliant way to introduce colour at eye-level within your garden and visual impact at height. There are many other climbing plants available that suit different situations. Should you be stuck with your landscape design or construction, Shape Landscaping, based in Auckland, provide landscape design right through to construction and maintenance and would love to work with you to create your perfect garden.
