Volcanoes in Space

The autumn school holiday programme at Stardome is going to be explosive! Watch the new immersive planetarium show Supervolcanoes and look back at rare classes of eruptions that have marshalled the energy that lurks, like a sleeping dragon, beneath the surface of planet Earth. The programme moves beyond Earth to explore the impact of giant volcanic eruptions around our solar system. Audiences will fly down to Neptune’s frigid moon Triton, and onto the ultimate volcanic world: Jupiter’s moon Io. On a visit to a legendary North American hot spot, Yellowstone National Park, the film asks: can a supervolcano erupt in our time. Then, led by a Stardome presenter, you will explore the Night Sky and learn more about the wonders above.

After the planetarium show take part in interactive activities all about volcanoes, and, if the weather is nice, we’ll let off water-powered rockets out the back.

Weekdays 18 – 28 April (excluding ANZAC day)

Bookings essential. $10 per adult, $12 per child

Yuri’s Night

In 1961, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin boarded the Vostok 1 spacecraft and made history as the first person in space. In 108 minutes, Yuri orbited Earth before landing by parachute in a field, much to the surprise of an unsuspecting farmer and her daughter. Gagarin later recalled, “When they saw me in my space suit and the parachute dragging alongside as I walked, they started to back away in fear. I told them, don’t be afraid, I am a Soviet citizen like you, who has descended from space and I must find a telephone to call Moscow!”

Every year on April 12th Yuri’s historic journey is marked with Yuri’s Night, an international celebration of Yuri. Join us at Stardome for Yuri’s Night 2017 and watch a special space exploration planetarium show. Presented on the 360-degree dome screen you’ll find out more about Yuri, the Apollo landing, the Mars Curiosity rover, the epic Pluto flyby by New Horizons, and we’ll show you how to find south for your own night sky exploration.

The evening includes a glass of wine (R18 only, ID required) and special Russian treats.

Bookings essential. $25 per person
