New Zealand led the world in the fight against smoking-related illnesses with our Smoke Free Environments Act in 1990, and almost three decades later, the country is on the threshold of passing another reveolutionary piece of public health legislation. The Associate Minister of Health, Nicky Wagner, has announced a law change that will see nicotine for use in vaping products legalised for import, marketing and sale by the end of 2018, signalling the Government’s support for smokers to switch to less harmful alternatives.

Large numbers of smokers worldwide have switched to vaping products rather than burn tobacco. This is a progressive move from the Government in establishing a pre-market approval process that could see some of these new products available to New Zealand smokers in early 2018. The process provides a more rapid and cost effective means of considering new smoke free products than the current system, which requires a change of legislation every time an advance in science and technology provides a better a better way to help people stop smoking.

The New Zealand Government’s moves send a clear message that it is smoke that causes smoking related disease, not nicotine, and that it is massivly safer to use a smoke free nicotine product. Smoke free products will not only massively reduce smoking related disease, they can literally deliver New Zealand’s smoke free goal and save many thousands of lives.

E-cigarette retailers say they have been assured by Government heatlh officials that they wil not be prosecuted for selling their nicotine based wares, despite the fact that the law has yet to come into force. Should the law pass they hope to sell their e-cigarettes everywhere tobaco is sold, saying for smokers to switch, smokeless devices have to be just as available as cigarettes, if not more available. Latest research suggests vaping is up to 95 per cent less harmful than tobacco smoking.
