This month Watercraft World are focusing on water safety, with summer just around the corner. The team at Watercraft World Supercentre are always very aware of how important it is to talk to people about water safety when they are selling one of their jet skis.

They advise that people should check the local water authorities, the harbour master, coast guard, and met service to get a good understanding of the restrictions on any special activities planned, such as swim events, sailing regattas etc.

Regarding jet skis, they particularly stress that weather conditions be taken into consideration when planning their jet ski trip. You should tell someone, who is not going on the trip with you, what you are doing, where you are going and when you intend to be back.

Some areas of New Zealand, such as Auckland for example, have a jet ski registration requirement, and failure to register your ski will result in fines from the authorities.

When involved in towing water sports on your jet ski you need to have a spotter who is facing the tow to communicate between the “towee” and the driver. Life jackets are compulsory, and should be worn at all times when riding a jet ski or when you are involved in any water sports being towed. Helmets are not compulsory but can be advisable, as they also give good wind protection on long rides where a helmet teamed up with a set of goggles can increase ride comfort.

As aquatic adventures and fishing are becoming more and more popular among jet ski owners, people should take consideration to carry marine communication and navigation equipment so they can track their position and communicate with other mariners. Clothing, food and water should be overcompensated for, as changes in the weather or unexpected changes in trip times could catch you out.
