It’s no secret that Kiwis are big on their DIY, but AA Insurance has issued a warning to weekend warriors that shoddy workmanship may not be covered by their insurance policies.

“If you’re undertaking serious renovations at your place, like adding a room, garage, extensive decking or veranda, then you should be aware that your insurance cover is dependent on the work complying with current building laws and regulations,” says Amelia Macandrew, Customer Relations Manager at AA Insurance.

The company recently conducted a Home Security Survey, interviewing 760 Kiwi homeowners. The survey revealed that 58% of them had undertaken DIY home improvement work in the last 12 months.

The results also revealed that accidents can and do happen when undertaking DIY home renovation work –  4% of those DIYers had a DIY disaster and accidentally damaged their property. Accidents may be few but the cost to fix the damages are never cheap.

A recent DIYer fell off a ladder while installing a walk-in wardrobe to the master bedroom, damaging an air compressor and two uninstalled toilets. His contents insurance covered $1,400 worth of damages.

However, more professional types of DIY building works and alterations aren’t covered by typical home policies and may require additional cover called Contract Works insurance.

AA Insurance advises DIYers to check that they are covered by their insurer before starting any work. When hiring a professional to do the job, always make sure any contractor you hire has their own insurance as well.

“Unless you’re qualified to do a job then it’s wise to hire a professional, so you can get on with the other jobs,” adds Amelia.

Construction and building work require expertise and experience not just in practical skills, but also in a wide range of other proficiencies. These include project management, health & safety, building standards & regulations, and engineering, among others.
