Subaru of New Zealand achieved a new annual sales record of 3343 vehicles in 2017 – 684 more than 2016 – equating to a huge growth year for the quintessentially-Kiwi All-Wheel Drive brand. The figures add up to a phenomenal 26% increase year-on-year in a growing market, with final industry growth for 2017 being reported this week at 9% versus 2016. Subaru’s previous annual record, set in 2016, had already been surpassed in November and the extra 181 sales in December provided the cherry on top.

Subaru of New Zealand Managing Director Wallis Dumper says: “Last year was an exciting ride, with yet another phenomenal year for Subaru sales, which is the sixth consecutive, year of growth. Our growth has come not only from our extremely loyal Subaru customer base who have upgraded their vehicle to the latest model, but also from a whole range of first-time buyers of our brand, who have been impressed with our new generation Subarus.

Subaru’s stylish new generation XV saw a huge 78% increase in sales.  XV models have been flying out the doors of Subaru Authorised Dealerships since the compact SUV’s all-new model launch in June. An increased production allocation from the factory will help relieve demand for this model in 2018.

In 2017, Outback retained its status as the highest-selling Subaru model ever, with 1469 units sold – up 16% on 2016 and accounting for 44% of total Subaru sales.“Since its relaunch in 2015 this SUV has struck an absolute chord with New Zealanders, due to its space, looks and All-Wheel Drive safety features. Outback continues to go from strength to strength and we see them everywhere on the country’s roads, transporting Kiwis and their families off on their adventures,” Mr Dumper says.

Forester also achieved solid growth, ending up 20% ahead of 2016.  This practical, capable, mid-sized SUV has impressive ground clearance at 220mm, making it a popular choice for those Kiwis who like to get off-road. The Forester Premium has had a price adjustment and at $44,990 is loaded with more standard features, including Powered Rear Tailgate, leather upholstery, heated electric seats, Satellite Navigation and EyeSight technology. This value package has increased the appeal of the Forester in a crowded segment.

Impreza was the stand-out performer in terms of percentage growth. The new generation All-Wheel Drive, 2.0 litre engine model launched late in 2016 was packed with extra features but retained the value price of $29,990. It saw a resurgence of Impreza’s popularity in 2017, resulting in an enormous 103% sales increase year-on-year.

Mr Dumper is looking forward to continuing the sales momentum through to 2018.

Our nationwide network of 16 Subaru Authorised Dealerships looks forward to welcoming back our existing customers and assisting more new buyers in 2018, as we roll out some exciting new developments throughout the year.
