Fatbergs and Grease Build-ups Causing Big Problems in New Zealand Sewers

New Zealand’s pristine natural waters may be celebrated worldwide, but our underground water systems could certainly use more work as the sewage systems suffer from constant “fatbergs” and grease build-ups, according to Watercare Services.

Recently, a sewer pipe failure had occurred in north island rural town Dannevirke. After opening a sink hole, the failure was discovered to have been caused by a mass of fat build-up, which had been feeding a mass of rats.

Peter Rogers, manager for asset protection at Watercare, attributed the cause to improper grease removal, especially in the home. He added that this issue is not isolated, and that information dissemination and community education on proper home drain care is now being conducted.

He also urges that wet wipes were another popular issue, as they combine with fats, oils and grease (FOG) to create “massive blockages.”

Fast food companies such as KFC and smaller outlets had been nearby, but Tararua District Mayor Tracey Collins was reported to not have attributed the ‘fatberg’ issue to these food businesses.

“These businesses have food safety and waste management plans and follow best practice with grease traps,” she said.

Rogers expressed the same sentiment, adding: “When new businesses start up… there are requirements they put in grease traps and we ensure they're sized properly and maintained appropriately.”

Installing a grease trap or other grease removal systems in key industries such as commercial kitchens is best practice to ensure both our natural waterways and underground water systems are safe from FOG build-ups. The Big Dipper grease trap from Clenz is a popular choice when it comes to point-of-source grease recovery.

In the home, Kiwis should be responsible with what they put down their drain systems. Proper disposal of fat stalls, grease, and solid waste should reduce the occurrence of grease build-up.
