With the end of the financial year the amendments which had been announced in January came into being, with pay day reporting being of specific interest in the coming year.

In January the Government announced amendments to the Employment Relations Act 2000, restoring statutory rest and meal breaks and limiting 90 day trials to employers with fewer than 20 employees. The purpose of this Bill is to restore key minimum standards and protections for employees, and to implement a suite of changes to promote and strengthen collective bargaining and union rights in the workplace. The changes are intended to introduce greater fairness in the workplace between employees and employers, in order to promote productive employment relationships.

The amendments will also install reinstatement as the primary remedy to unfair dismissal, increasing protection for vulnerable workers. It will also go along way to strengthening collective bargaining and union rights in the workplace. The changes to flexible working arrangements aim to improve people’s participation in the labour market, and to better reflect modern lifestyles. Flexible working arrangements help employees find the right work-life balance for them and their employer.

There are also a number of further proposed additions to the Employment Relations Act 2000. Additionally, the minimum wage increased to $16.50 from 1/4/18, and a further increase is planned to $20.00 / hour by 2021. There was also a change to parental leave payments from 1/7/18, with the Parental Leave and Employment Amendment Bill being passed late last year.

Pay day reporting Is another change, along with a reduction in the electronic filing threshold from $100,000 of PAYE per year to $50,000 of PAYE.
