Post Haste Couriers are specialists in express parcel delivery and experts in tailoring total distribution solutions to meet the needs of their customers, and this month and again in June, they are advising on packaging and labelling.

To start with, strong packaging and accurate ticketing equals a more efficient courier company and happy customers. As the Post Haste team are often asked about the best way to package and ticket parcels, they provide some handy tips.

Packaging your items correctly will help minimise any damage or delay caused through a failure to do so.  Packaging do’s and don’ts:
•  Labels, barcodes and tickets must not be obscured by strapping or tape.
•  If recycling cartons or boxes, remove or completely cover old labels and tickets!
•  Remove any DANGEROUS GOODS stickers if these no longer apply.
•  Ensure strapping is tight enough to keep parcels bound together and balanced during transit.
•  Avoid using tape to secure several parcels together (use nylon strapping if available).
•  Plastic shrink-wrap may not be sufficient protective packaging on its own. Place irregular shaped items in a box, using internal cushioning to prevent movement within box.

For all parcels weighing over 20kg, please ensure:
•  A strong, suitable box is used (no sharp edges please!).
• Weight is balanced over centre of box.
•  Apply ‘CAUTION: HEAVY ITEM’ labels
•  Use internal cushioning to prevent movement of item within box.

For fragile parcels:
•  Ensure items inside the package are well cushioned. Insert bubble wrap, polystyrene nuggets, shredded paper, or corrugated cardboard above, below, and between items.
•  Keep a supply of recycled Sealed Air bags handy for use inside fragile parcels.
•  Ensure all items are wrapped individually, and there is sufficient packing material between them in order to avoid product-to-product damage. Loosely packed items will move in transit and cause damage as they knock against each other.
• Protect sharp edges of any item you are sending, with tape and extra padding.
• Remember the 5/5 rule for fragile items: 5cm from the walls, base and top of the box, and 5cm of cushioning around each individual item.
