Astronomy can sometimes be a hard concept to grasp. It’s intangible, riddled with scientific language and often brushed aside as a ‘boring’ science topic. Not anymore!

Stardome is releasing a brand-new show series called ‘Stories in the Sky’. It brings astronomy and the night sky to life by introducing visitors to the ancient myths and legends hidden in the stars. This June and July, Winter Stories in the Sky will be the first and second of the four-part series to be released.

Both the young, and the young-at-heart will learn about the art and science of stargazing through the use of fantastic Greek and Māori characters. Narrated by Lucy Lawless and John Rhys-Davies, visitors will not only delve into the myths and legends behind the constellations visible in the season of their visit, but they will also learn what a constellation is, how they are used for astronomical purposes and where the names of planets come from.

Our perspective of the sky is ever changing, which means we see different constellations and stars as we move through the seasons. For this reason, Stories in the Sky is delivered as a seasonal series. Each season, the content and stories vary, based on what visitors can see in the sky around the night of their visit.

Visitors can keep coming back and meet new characters in the planetarium sky, then head out to the courtyard telescopes (weather permitting) and spot them for themselves in the real night sky. The series aims to bring excitement to astronomy, stargazing and ancient storytelling in a stellar adventure for all ages. Winter Stories in the Sky is screening at 6pm Saturdays and Sundays in June (includes telescopes), and is also screening 9-20 July weekdays at 4pm.
