On the 14th of November, 2016, the 7.8 magnitude earthquake changed the seaside town of Kaikōura’s landscape forever. And with the only access to the rest of New Zealand cut off from the Kaikōura locals, it was crucial that the roadworks rebuild be underway and completed as soon as possible.

State Highway 1 (SH1) has since then opened on the 15th of December last year, with ongoing help from Fletcher Reinforcing, who has been involved in supplying North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Rebuild (NCTIR) since mid-2017.

The Christchurch Fletcher Reinforcing team had a team of steel placers working on sites for four to five months to help install the pre-fabricated cages. The expert and fully-trained staff were an excellent aide to the project, and were also on call to work with NCTIR to deliver to very strict, and often unpredictable, timelines.

Fletcher Reinforcing supplied galvanised steel and reinforcing mesh for the important marina project. Within the short lead time available, they were also able to supply galvanised ReidBar™ to help ensure NCTIR could reach their opening date.

Fletcher Reinforcing’s on-site steel placing service is unparalleled by any other New Zealand company and is available throughout the country. They offer both commercial and industrial construction customers with a one-stop-shop package, featuring high-quality product as well as steadfast installation by a professional team.

Currently, SH1 north and south of Kaikōura is now open for travel 24/7 between Picton and Christchurch. However, road works are still present and all travellers should check latest road updates before beginning their travels.
