Consumers are increasingly adding ‘having a social conscience’ to their criteria when deciding on which brands they engage with and what products they buy.

Mark Stevenson, website developer from Auckland graphic design company Graphic Detail, says this wasn’t the main reason they instigated the ‘Site For Sore Eyes’ project, which sees every new website build they complete funding a sight restoring cataract operation in disadvantaged communities, but it aligns with his team’s values.

“Our Graphic Detail web development team realised that we can play a larger part in making a difference. I was once told that the perfect form of charity is doing something for someone when they will never know you did. I liked that. Some of our clients don’t even know that by letting Graphic Detail build them a website they have funded an operation.”

Companies are increasingly responding by looking at their community profile and asking themselves if they are doing enough for not only the people they do business with but even wider afield.

Stevenson says while they have previously donated graphic design work such as billboard banners, brochures, bus stop advert, promotional signage, HTML digital banners and web development to charitable causes throughout his career, he didn’t think any of it had resulted in anything as life-changing as curing blindness. “We’ve always had local charities that we support, and we always hope we are making a difference, but being able to help someone regain their sight is amazing.”

For every website that Graphic Detail designs a donation is made online to the Fred Hollows Foundation website. ‘Our clients help people regain their lives. In poorer Pacific communities when you lose your sight you lose your ability to function within your community and support your family. These people are often relegated to back rooms for the rest of their lives and instead of contributing to their families they become a drain on resources. It is incredibly easy to fix.’

The online videos of patients when the bandages come off are recommended viewing by Stevenson. “You can’t not be affected by the joy as they realise they can see again. What a gift to be able to give someone”.
