The standard operation for dental crowns typically takes at least two appointments, potentially spread out over several weeks. With newer technology, such as CEREC same day crowns, the procedure can be begun and completed in a single appointment of just a few hours. 

Conventional crowns are designed with the whelp of physical impressions that a dentist takes via a putty mould. The crown made based on these impressions is either porcelain/ceramic, metal, or porcelain and metal. The process of turning the mould into a crown is the cause behind the delay – it can take a lab a week to perfectly shape the crown to fit your mouth. 

CEREC same day crowns are such a good alternative because they eliminate this process entirely, by taking a digital scan of your mouth with a handheld wand, and then modelling the required crown as a computer rendering. From within the CEREC software, the crown can be 3D printed on the same day, and then fitted immediately. 

Dentists often refer to the technology as CAD/CAM, which stands for Computer Assisted Designing, and Computer Assisted Manufacturing respectively. Same day crowns save you time, removing the need for you to require extra time away from work. They also save you money, as you only need to pay for the upfront appointment, without worrying about paying for a follow up installation appointment a week or two later. 

While many dentists and patients believe, with fair reason, that metal crowns are stronger and more durable, same day crowns can last just as long. The only requirement is that they are maintained. All porcelain or ceramic crowns need to be cared for as though they were regular teeth – neglecting them can lead to issues, but proper dental hygiene should be a given in the situation regardless.
