It’s interesting how flowers signal a mood change from winter to spring and then summer. However, spring flowers such as the highly scented Erlicheer, really start coming in in mid-winter. By October we really are in mid-season with the first hint of summer flowers starting to arrive.

The Floral Studio’s customers really start to respond to those beautiful blues of Iris; yellows of the daffodils and creams of Erlicheer. Daffodils are purportedly the “killer flowers” – many florists will tell you you cannot mix and match “daffs,” but the newer varieties have become very tolerant, particularly of flowers grown from bulbs. Hence the great combination of Iris, daffs and the fragrance of narcissi erlicheer. Recently the new season’s flush of tulips have begun to arrive and these will now continue flowering right through until May and Mothers Day.

Peonies are also starting to appear in the markets, New Zealand varieties and by Labour weekend every manner of colour will be with us until late December. During the winter peonies were imported from Holland. They were a much smaller more compact flower than the New Zealand ones that we have become very accustomed too. It’ a real pity that we can’t grow peonies in the North Island with any great success and they simply do not like the heat and humidity of the environment from Taupo North.

This October The Floral Studio also welcome back their main florist, Natalie, after four months off having baby Cooper. Shontei, who is our amazing graduate from the floristry school in Manukau will continue with them as they move up to seven days a week. Few florists are open regularly on Sundays but with the very vibrant population of Grey Lynn and the wonderful market day every Sunday Irene and her team have decided now they are back to full strength to have their beautiful fresh product available every day.
