Every year, December creeps up on us all, and one second, Stardome’s telescope operators are rugged up in thermals and multiple layers in the depths of winter; the next, they’re watching the sun set later and later each night, before being treated to warm, balmy stargazing sessions.
With December, of course, come the jingle bells, the mistletoe and all the holiday festivities, and at Stardome, they have a slew of holiday season events and activities, starting with the Great Christmas Giveback.
It’s the season of giving, so from 17 November to 16 December, Stardome are embracing the spirit of giving by giving back to both their customers and to two very deserving, local charities. By bringing along an item to donate to Auckland City Mission or SPCA Auckland (or both!), customers will see a regular planetarium show for only $6. All regular shows during this time, will be discounted with a donated item, per ticket, to one of these well-known Auckland charities.
17 November – 16 December
All regular planetarium shows (Excludes Tuesday nights and special events)
Bookings essential on 09 624 1246, Conditions apply. www.stardome.org.nz/show/the-great-christmas-giveback-2018/
Christmas Night Sky
Did you know that there’s a Christmas Tree in the sky?! Well, not quite. The Christmas Tree cluster is a star formation that puts all earthly festivities to shame. It’s 2,600 light-years away in the constellations Monoceros, making up part of the NGC 2264 region. It’s a group of young stars supposed to loosely represent the shape of a Christmas tree! If you want to learn more interesting holiday season facts like this one, then head along to Stardome’s Christmas Night Sky show. A 360-degree planetarium experience, you will sit under New Zealand’s largest snow-globe and explore the stars, constellations, planets above Auckland…but with added sugar and spice!
Wed-Sun during December (until 23 Dec), 8pm, Adults $15, Children $12, Bookings Essential. www.stardome.org.nz/show/christmas-night-sky/ .
The Stardome Shop
The Christmas Tree cluster may be 2,600 light-years away…but your presents under your tree are much, much closer. This holiday season, the Stardome Shop is filled to the brim with goodies suitable for the budding scientist, the stargazer, stocking stuffers and that certain someone who has everything from telescopes, to slime making experiments and everything in-between. Open during Stardome hours, which means it’s perfect for late night Christmas shopping. www.stardome.org.nz/visitor-info/the-stardome-shop/ .
