DMARC – or Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance – is the newest available email security protocol. DMARC builds off these existing structures, allowing administrators of domains to publish policies in their DNS records to outline if DKIM, SPF, or both are being used when sending email from said domain.

 Essentially, DMARC is the latest line of defence against spoofed email addresses, and phishing scams. That said, there are a lot of misconceptions around how it works.

First of all, in order to work, a DMARC DNS record needs to be published directly by the domain owner, in order for it to ensure that the SPF and DKIM protocols are actually authenticating against the correct base domain.
