Now that we are coming in to the winter months, it is time to ensure your gutter and cesspits are all clean ready for the stormy weather. If you have concern about your stormwater lines, now is the time to get them checked to avoid any flooding in winter.

Stormwater runoff is rainfall that flows over the ground surface, and is created when rain falls on roads, driveways, parking lots, rooftops and other paved surfaces that do not allow water to soak into the ground. The property owner is responsible for ensuring that storm water pipes are connected to the Council nominated Legal Point of Discharge, and that their stormwater runoff does not affect other property owners. For issues relating to private drainage it is recommended you contact a plumber such as Drainage TV to investigate.

Each property is allocated with a location to direct their stormwater drainage - typically this location will be to a Council underground drain or to the kerb and channel in the adjacent roadway. All drainage issues beyond this point are the responsibility of Council. However, if you suspect there is a blockage in one of your drainage pipes it suggested you contact Drainage TV.

If you find stormwater entering your property from a neighbour’s property, the neighbour is the one who is responsible. All property owners have legal obligations to capture, collect and dispose of stormwater from all hard surfaces, through underground pipes to the Council nominated Legal Point of Discharge so as not to cause a nuisance to adjoining property owners, so once again for issues relating to private you need to call Drainage TV.

It is also a good idea to have your drains scheduled for maintenance once or twice a year so you can prevent any issues from arising, and don’t ignore blocked storm water drains as this can lead to substantial flooding and water damage to your property. Always call a professional instead of trying some quick fix that could cause more damage, so for more information on council cctv inspections, unblocking sewage pipes and unblocking kitchen drains please go to www.drainagetv.co.nz .
