Single-use plastic shopping bags have been banned in New Zealand from 1 July 2019. Businesses cannot provide clients with single-use plastic shopping bags anymore. Packaging Products have alternatives that will work well for businesses that are looking for environmentally friendly shopping bags.

Alternatives to single-use plastic shopping bags include long-life reusable bags in heavier-duty plastics (eg, polypropylene or polyethylene terephthalate (PET)); long-life bags made of lightweight synthetic fabrics (ie, nylon, polypropylene or polyester); and cotton, canvas, jute and hessian bags and those made out of recycled fabric.

Packaging Products is an online supplier of packaging supplies including New Zealand's largest range of stock boxes, cases and cartons. They also stock paper bags, retail and gift supplies, tapes and adhesives, machinery and equipment and much more. The company delivers throughout New Zealand providing a fast and friendly service to their customers.

Their large range of specialist equipment enables Packaging Products to produce everything from custom printed labels and signage through to customised boxes, engraved materials and branded promotional products.

They stock a large range of environmentally friendly paper, compostable and biodegradable bags as well as rubbish bags, drum liners, mattress bags, carton liners, gift and carry bags, mailer and courier bags, polythene bags, resealable bags and wine bags. Packaging Products also have branded reusable bags that are available for businesses available in bundles.

The new ban applies to all new single-use plastic shopping bags with handles that are made of plastic up to 70 microns in thickness. This includes light-weight plastic bags commonly found at supermarket, takeaway food and other retail checkouts; heavier boutique-style plastic shopping bags commonly found at department or clothing stores and ‘emergency’ bags offered by some supermarkets as an alternative to a free single-use plastic bag.

The ban also covers bags made of degradable plastic. This is regardless of whether the plastic material is made from fossil-fuel or biological sources such as plants. This includes biodegradable, compostable and oxy-degradable plastics bags.
