Is the representation and recognition of women in science still a work in progress? Have you heard of Cecilia Payne, Emmy Noether or Beatrice Tinsley? These are some of the wisest, most extraordinary contributors to science; yet most of us have no idea who they are.

Mission Artemis (named after twin sister of Apollo and goddess of the Moon), will be the path of NASA's new program to return astronauts to the lunar surface by 2024. NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine has promised that the mission will also deliver the first woman to the moon, therefore it is important walk back in time and a glimpse into the future to facilitate an open discussion on how far we have come, but also how far we have to go, in ensuring inclusivity and equality for all. With NASA’s goal of sending humans to Mars, Artemis is the first step to begin this next era of exploration.

WISE: Women in Science Exhibition explores the past, present and future of feminine faces in space and science fields; showcasing how much these hidden heroes have contributed to STEM over the past 200 years. WISE hopes to encourage, educate and excite and looks to open the eyes and doors for those hoping to one day become one of these heroes (hopefully minus the ‘hidden’) themselves.

11-29 August, regular Stardome hours. Entry included in space gallery fee. https://www.stardome.org.nz/show/wise-women-in-science-exhibition/ .

Mars 1001

“This time, when we go to the Moon, we will stay. And then we will use what we learn on the Moon to take the next giant leap - sending astronauts to Mars,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine states. Just as Apollo inspired a generation 50 years ago, NASA continues to inspire with feats of science and exploration today. In this brand-new show, travel to the not-so-distant future as humanity journey to the Red Planet and join an international crew of astronauts who are about to embark on the first interplanetary journey in history; the first manned mission to the surface of Mars.

Reporter Miles O’Brein reports live from his Space Headquarters TV Studio in New York while events unfold for the crew on their heroic 1001 days long mission. You’ll witness their brave attempts to put human footprints on Mars and return safety back home to Earth. Featuring a mix of live-action, advanced digital simulations and cutting-edge technology, you’ll embark on the greatest adventure of the 21st century and unlock the secrets of humanity’s next home.

7pm during August, Wednesday to Sunday. $12 Adults, $10 Child. Bookings essential. https://www.stardome.org.nz/show/mars-1001/
