For all those who have been fortunate enough to secure a property on the beautiful Rangitahi Peninsula, the Rangitahi team have created Design Guidelines for developing each individual property, and this month we take a look at landscaping.

A holistic approach should be taken when designing a property on the Peninsula. Landscaping is an important aspect of development that helps to blend the architecture with the natural environment. Landscaping creates an enjoyable living environment for all. From concept design, outdoor living spaces should be considered just as important as indoor living spaces.

Here is an excerpt from the guidelines; “…All landscaping work undertaken should be of a very high quality and appearance, and planting should be selected for optimum growing conditions and not require a lot of maintenance to become established or for it to thrive in the long term. Planting should define front boundaries, reinforce entrances, frame views from the house onto the street, provide privacy and separation between each lot and allow solar access to windows and living areas…”

Ecosourced Waikato, the Department of Conservation and local and regional authorities have also put together a great resource for native planting, specifically in the Raglan coastal region. It was designed for ecological restoration purposes and helps to ensure the natural ecosystems of the Waikato remain. This is a great resource for those with sections on Rangitahi, as it outlines the characteristics of the coastal environment, specifically the ‘Harbour shore’ for Rangitahi residents, and what is most likely to occur/grow well there.

It lists different categories of common plant species and suggests the total number to be planted per 100 square metres, the species tolerances/preferences in the Raglan coastal environment, along with planting tips. This will give you a good guide to planting on your sections and help you choose the right plant species that will thrive and survive on the land. It also provides information on the plants’ value as bird food, attracting local wildlife, as well as the importance of ecosourced plants to help maintain the native ecosystem.

You can download the PDF document on the Rangitahi Journal site at  https://rangitahi.co.nz/journal/ Planting guide for Western Waikato. Waikato District Council and Rangitahi Limited have agreed to an approach that ties development outcomes to a Master Plan. The Master Plan provides guidelines for a co-ordinated urban and architectural design response more akin to the traditional Raglan ‘village-scape’ while providing for diversity and richness of individual houses, so for more information on Raglan properties for sale, Raglan real estate and Waikato property please go to https://rangitahi.co.nz .
