All teens aged 13 to 17 years old are eligible to receive free basic dental treatments, and Real Dentistry’s dentists can provide this service. The services include examinations, radiographs (if required), preventative treatment such as fluoride application and fissure sealants, root canal fillings, extractions (but not orthodontic extractions), oral health education and encouragement to continue good oral health, and restorative treatment.

Children in New Zealand are entitled to one free check up per calendar year. If there is another problem like a tooth ache during the year, they are able to make another free appointment, where the tooth ache will be assessed. When your child sees a dentist you can expect, an examination of your child’s mouth, scaling, prophylaxis (cleaning) treatment when required, oral health education and orthodontic referrals if required. If any orthodontic treatment is required this is not free.

Each practice must have an adolescent contract with the District Health Board, which Real Dentistry does, and if care is beyond their scope of practice the dental therapist will refer to an appropriate dentist or specialist dentist. Care will not be free if you chose a dentist who does not have a contract with the DHB.

To enrol your child in a free dental service call 0800 TALK TEETH (0800 825 583) or for more information view the Ministry of Health Lets Talk Teeth website. Note: Orthodontic care and tooth whitening is not free for under 18 year olds. Accidents are covered by ACC. Enrol your child as early as possible, so that you can arrange the first check-up. Your child’s first visit will usually be between their 1st and 2nd birthdays. Dental staff will let you know the time of your appointment once you enrol.

Real Dentistry’s team of experienced dental practitioners have a collaborative approach to your children’s oral health needs, so for more information on veneers, dentists Wellington and dental hygienists please go to www.realdentistry.co.nz .
