Media Release: Hutt City Council to remove paid parking from Jackson Street for Christmas
Parking in Petone will be free throughout December as Hutt City Council lifts paid parking on Jackson Street and in the Peel Street Car Park for the busy Christmas season.
From 1 December 2025 to 4 January 2026, shoppers can enjoy the festive period without worrying about meters. Usual time limits will remain in place to ensure fair access to parks.
Mayor Fauono Ken Laban says the move is a simple way to support local businesses and make Christmas shopping easier for families.
"Petone is one of our most loved destinations. Free parking helps bring people in, encourages them to stay a little longer, and supports the small businesses that are the heart of the community," says Mayor Ken.
The Jackson Street Programme, a business association in Petone, approached Council about ways to support the retail area during its busiest period.
Jackson Street Programme Coordinator and business advocate Hellen Swales says this change will bring shoppers back into the heart of Petone for the crucial trading period.
"We want families to come into Petone, enjoy the festive season, and spend time together. Free parking makes that easier while time limits will keep things fair for everyone."
Mayor Ken says this December initiative is part of a wider, long-term conversation.
"We are working with the Jackson Street Programme on a parking approach that supports our local economy and provides fair access for everyone. December's free parking gives us space to keep that work moving while backing our retailers at a crucial time."
