WAITAKERE CITY

Police have released details of the post mortem examination conducted today on the human remains discovered in dense bush in the Waitakere ranges last weekend.

The decomposed body was found on Sunday by a group of pig hunters. The remains were located in a sector of bush near to the Arataki Information Centre on Scenic Drive.

Detective Sergeant Roger Small of the Waitemata District CIB says the autopsy has determined that the human remains are those of a strongly built male, whose estimated age is in his 40's.

"The deceased man is about 172 cm tall, and is most likely European. However it cannot be ruled out that he may be part Maori. The male was a smoker."

"Police enquiries to identify when death occurred are progressing. We are confident that he died post 1988 so the remains of the deceased have been in the bush for a long time, possibly up to 20 years."

"Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the death of this male. We are confident there are no suspicious circumstances."

"If anyone wishes to nominate a person whom they know has been missing since the late 1980's then they are welcome to contact me at Henderson Police Station on 09 839 0600."

"They may well have the essential clue which will help identify this deceased man so that his remains can be buried with dignity," Roger Small said.
