Wellington’s 8500 dog owners are reminded that this year’s dog registration fees are due by 1 July. All dogs aged over three months must be registered. This year’s fee is unchanged from previous years at $147.50 for ‘entire’ dogs, $107.50 for neutered or spayed dogs, and $42.50 for working dogs.

The charge for approved responsible owners is $52.50 per dog. A 50 percent penalty charge will be added to accounts that are a month overdue.

Responsible Dog Owners need to pay their fees by 1 July to retain their responsible status. Dog owners who lose their RDO status are required to pay the full fee plus any penalty charges that apply.

Wellington City Council Social Portfolio Leader Councillor Ngaire Best says the registration fee is a legal requirement and goes towards education programmes for schools, dog patrols and attending to complaints, the dog shelter at Moa Point and the administration of the Council's dog control programme.

"Dog-lovers want the best for their pets and registration enables the Council to maintain a safe and healthy environment for dogs, their owners and other residents. Registering also means that owners can update their contact details so the Council can return the dog if it gets lost."

"Accurate information on the dog population allows the Council to plan for the future needs of dogs and dog owners. This year we have sent out a questionnaire asking dog owners for their opinions on the Council's designated off-leash dog exercise areas. Responses to the questionnaire will help us to plan and provide recreational opportunities for dogs and their owners across the city in the future."
