Now viewers can enjoy their favourite entertainment with even less power thanks to the eco-innovation featured in Sony’s new WE5 BRAVIA TV.

With its superb energy-efficiency and exceptional clarity, the WE5 BRAVIA uses the world’s first micro-tubular Hot Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (HCFL) backlight developed by Sony, using technology adapted by Trinitron displays, to reduce overall power consumption in the TV by more than 50% compared with conventional Cold Cathode Lamps.

The WE5 Series is the first BRAVIA that features a unique Smart Presence Sensor that detects body heat and movement when users are sitting near the screen. When they leave the room, the sensor activates a ‘Picture Off’ mode, saving energy while still leaving the sound on, and restoring the picture as soon as the room is re-entered.

In addition to its revolutionary backlight and Presence Sensor, the WE5 Series includes yet more controls to minimise electricity use. Pre-set timers allow for the television to switch to standby when required, while the new Energy Saving Switch conveniently reduces power consumption with the flick of a switch, and immediately returns the television to previous settings when switched back on.

Consideration for the environment isn’t unique to the WE series. Sony has been working to reduce the impact of all BRAVIA TVs through initiatives such as reduced packaging, recycling, and a reduction in the use of hazardous materials. All BRAVIA TVs reduce LCD panel power consumption even further with a light sensor which automatically adjusts backlight brightness depending on ambient room light. Complementing the auto-light sensor, there’s an optional power saving mode that reduces backlight illumination levels for comfortable viewing in dim light.

Aside from its eco credentials, the WE5 Series BRAVIA offers exceptional viewing quality. The Full
HD 1080p LCD panel is complemented by Sony’s new BRAVIA ENGINE 3 which cleans, filters and optimises image data to reduce picture noise while boosting contrast and colour range.

Motionflow 100Hz technology with Image Blur Reduction doubles the displayed frame rate for smoother, sharper sports and fast-moving action scenes.

“Sony consistently leads the way in reducing the environmental impact of its televisions and other electronic products”, says TV Product Manager at Sony New Zealand, Guy Coleman.

“At no time does the WE5 sacrifice picture quality for power saving. Whether you love movies with high speed car chases or just want sports replayed in detail, the WE5 brings it all home with crystal clear perfection.”

As the remarkable WE5 demonstrates, this year’s BRAVIA line-up doesn’t just look and perform better than ever before, but aims to reduce the environmental footprint of the home entertainment experience.

The new WE5 BRAVIA HD 40-inch TV will retail at $3499.95 and the WE5 BRAVIA 46-inch TV will retail at $4,499.95 and is available from April 2009.
